Durable preservation of tropical forests
Precious Forest Foundation (PFF) operates and encourages platforms for exchange among the most diverse interest groups concerned with tropical forests. Regular participants include representatives of the indigenous population and the scientific community, companies, NGOs, states and international organizations. PFF initiates projects, prepares and presents topics that are relevant to sustainable management and encourages a broad discussion among the most important stakeholders – platforms that are surprisingly often lacking today.
Tropical forests are preserved durably through sustainable use
Tropical forests’ services are of central importance for life on earth: they are of biggest importance for global water reservoirs, as C02 sinks and therefore for climate protection, for the preservation of biodiversity with its flora and fauna and funga and as habitat of many indigenous peoples. PFF is convinced that responsible forest management is an effective contribution to the lasting preservation of tropical forests and as an important complement to the placement under protection of large natural forest areas.
Due to missing management structures, protection areas are only rarely really effectively protected. And sustainably managed tropical forests, as well as protected forest areas, provide valuable ecosystem services, which are irreplaceable for life on earth.
Unsustainable use of tropical forests usually destroys them irretrievably or degrades them to such an extent that their original services are no longer guaranteed. In this way, important foundations of life for the whole of humanity are permanently damaged or destroyed for short-term interests.
Today, most tropical forest areas are influenced by humans. They form the basis of their livelihood in many ways. Placing them under strict protection therefore falls short of the mark. Sustainable management makes extremely careful use of the available resources. It not only preserves them, but also identifies all biologically particularly valuable zones and protects them efficiently. It also creates effective buffer zones around designated nature conservation areas. In this way, it enables millions of people to live in dignity by making resources available and protecting them at the same time.

Tropical forests still cover significant areas of our planet. They account for half of all forests globally, are extremely rich in species, store enormous amounts of carbon and thus stabilize our climate. At the same time, they provide indispensable raw materials for mankind – especially in emerging countries with high construction activity, wood consumption is constantly increasing.
But despite their importance, tropical forests are highly endangered ecosystems. In most cases, forests are still exploited like mines. Sustainable forest use is therefore becoming increasingly important.
