Presentation of the most important findings regarding the feasibility of CO2 projects in forest concessions
Form International (FI) and the Precious Forests Foundation (PFF) invited SFM-interested participants to an online workshop at which the results of the first test runs of the jointly developed carbon pre-feasibility checklist for SFM concessionaires in the tropics were presented.
Purpose of the guiding document:
- Providing clarity on project eligibility for carbon certification
- Explaining processes or raising issues to consider
- Determining an approximate bandwidth of carbon credits
The checklist was tested in concessions in Indonesia, Mozambique and Tanzania and the following highlights were captured from the concessionaires’ presentations:
- The pre-feasibility checklist is of great value for defining the next steps based on the evaluation of distinctive parameters for a specific SFM concession.
- It is important to understand the critical elements: such as specific country regulations, especially regarding benefit sharing, which are not always only black and white. One should not get discouraged too early!
- The mechanism of additionality is unfair for SFM concessions which have been well-managed for many years. The reference deforestation rate and extended rotation age can be important elements to tackle this unfortunate situation.
